Church of Santa Ines

The church of Santa Agnès de Corona was built at the end of the 18th century to attend to the spiritual needs of the residents of Pla de Corona, one of the most isolated areas of Ibiza. Despite this, it was a fairly large community, due to the fertility of the land of the plain, which made it ideal for agriculture.

Construction of the whitewashed temple, with a single nave and six side chapels, began in 1785 and was finished off in 1812, although religious services had been held for many years before.

It is an atypical temple for two reasons. In the first place, it draws attention for its low height, unique on the island. Apparently, the reason is that the residents of Corona entered into competition with those of Sant Mateu, to see who could finish their church first.

Given the difficulties and the lack of means, they decided to cut it down in height to finish off the work beforehand. The interior, far from being harmed, allows you to enjoy the beautiful lines of the nave more closely.
